ISP Evaluation

The Cambridge Public Schools’ Intensive Studies Program (ISP) was evaluated over the past six months by Nancy Brigham Associates (NBA) of Lexington, MA. NBA’s report, titled Perceptions and Realities: An Evaluation of the Intensive Studies Program, was published on the CPS website on December 2, 2011.  It includes a thoughtful exploration of the issue of teaching advanced learners in CPS. NBA’s recommendations, included in the report, will influence the development of CPS’s new Academic Challenge policy, a draft of which is also available online.

Text from the slides of the presentation is here.  An online video of the presentation is here (it’s part of the School Committee meeting). Ms. Brigham, when asked to summarize what’s at the core of her firm’s recommendations said:

“Let’s not lose the capacity to make sure that the kids who need and want academic challenge are afforded that opportunity.”

In other ISP-related news, Cambridge Community Television covered the November 11 ISP students’ rally in Harvard Square and conducted several interviews with students, including a Harvard Senior who attended ISP and happened to pass by. The segment was produced and directed by Carolyn Duffy, a Cambridge parent.

On Dec 13th the Cambridge Chronicle published an article about the expectations gap described in the ISP evaluation by Nancy Brigham Association.
